For its first concert of the year the University Philharmonia Orchestra will perform Felix Mendelssohn’s captivating Scottish Symphony, a piece inspired by his visit to the ruins of the Palace of Holyrood in Edinburgh in 1829. The whole work, completed thirteen years later, evolves like a musical stroll around the stones, arches, and half walls of the palace: somber tones, folky sections, magical textures, and a triumphant ending. Tam O’Shanter Overture by Malcolm Arnold as well as Thomas Adès' dances from his opera Powder Her Face provide a less idealistic and Romantic contribution to this musical portrait of Scotland.
