SynSem Discussion Group: Some notes regarding the form and function of Chomsky's recent ideas on the operation Merge

Daniel Seely

The primary goal of the talk is to discuss Chomsky's recent thinking on Merge. Merge is argued to apply 'freely.' Does this mean that any two syntactic objects can be merged, regardless if they are contained in the same larger object? Do we allow parallel, sidewards, and 'double peak'-creating Merge? If not, why not? We explore Chomsky's answer to the general question: "What are the basic conditions that fundamental operations should satisfy and what are the consequences of those conditions with respect to the form and function of Merge?"
