Oriol Sans, conductor.

Pre-concert lecture at 7:15 PM in the lower lobby.

Of all his symphonies, Beethoven’s favorite was his “little symphony in F”, his Eighth. When asked about its unfortunately lesser success compared to that of the Seventh symphony, the composer said “that is because it is so much better.” Unexpected turns, exciting modulations, and an incredibly creative instrumentation make this symphony the most experimental and exciting works he wrote in a purely classical style. The concert will close with Richard Strauss’s suite from his popular opera Rosenkavalier. This work follows the contour of the story, highlighting some of the best moments including Viennese waltzes and love duets, all amplified by Strauss’s magnificent orchestration.
