Causal Inference in Education Research Seminar (CIERS): Who makes the best implementer? Examining teacher experience and education in early childhood education in Chile

Abstract
As a part of Chilean President Michelle Bachelet's social reforms during her tenure was a push to expand access to and increase quality in public early childhood education. Un Buen Comienzo was a randomized control trial that took place from 2008 to 2012 that sought to improve prekindergarten quality by providing professional development to 119 prekindergarten teachers in 64 schools in Santiago, Chile. While the intervention was found to produce null effects on language and literacy student outcomes, a follow-up study revealed that teachers who implemented the pedagogical techniques imparted during the intervention had significant positive effects on student gains. As a matter of policy relevance, this presentation examines the role that teacher education and years of experience plays in determining the extent to which teachers adopt the instructional practices discussed during the intervention.
