A Gentle Introduction to Inverse Problems

The field of inverse problems aims to reconstruct parameters of some system from observed data. Questions of this sort span a broad variety of applied mathematical fields, including medical imaging, meteorology, geological prospecting, and more. In particular, inverse problems in medical imaging ask what can be deduced about the interior of a patient's body from exterior measurements alone. In this talk, I will aim to give a high-level overview of the field of inverse problems, and talk about two particular problems of interest to medical imaging: the Calderón problem and the inverse radiative transport problem.
