In this talk we will first give a brief introduction to complex semisimple Lie algebras and classification results via Dynkin diagrams. Then we will move onto real semisimple Lie algebras and restricted root space decomposition. If time permitting we will discuss the connection between root space decomposition in the complex setting and the restricted root space decomposition in the real setting.
