Student Dynamics/Geometry Topology Seminar

Postcritically finite unicritical polynomials

Consider polynomials of the form f(z)=z^d+c, where d is greater than or equal to 2 and c is a complex number. In this talk, we will look at an overview of the dynamics of such polynomials, and see how topological models for these can be built by hand. Of importance are the connected components of the Multibrot set containing these polynomials-we shall see that these are ramified covers of the unit disk, and shall show, in the case of d=2, the 'nesting' structure of these components. Most of this work is due to William Thurston, John Milnor, Adrien Douady and John Hubbard.
