Intro to Local Cohomology

Given a ring R, an ideal I, and an R-module M, we can construct the local cohomology modules of M along I. There are many equivalent constructions, we will focus on three in this talk: Koszul complex, Cech complex, and in terms of right derived functors. The modules which we obtain in this way can be thought of as obstructions to certain favorable algebraic/geometric properties. The applications we will focus on are depth, number of generators of an ideal, and extension of sections. Most of the talk should be accessible to anyone who has taken Math 614.
