Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) deals with the construction of quotients of group actions in algebraic geometry. In this talk, I will try to motivate why GIT is a satisfactory theory for taking quotients, and if time permits, I will demonstrate how certain moduli spaces are constructed as GIT quotients.
