The Muskat or Hele-Shaw problem refers to a class of free-boundary problems built upon Darcy's law. They describe one-phase or multi-phase fluid flows in porous media, and they can also model fluids confined in a thin gap between two parallel plates. In this talk, I will explain the background and history of these problems, review several results on short and long-time behaviors of the solutions, and briefly explain the concepts and tools involved in the proofs.
