Freedom Dreaming New Worlds: a participatory theater workshop
with Alyssa Vera Ramos
When we consider working toward social justice, it's common to focus on what we don’t want: systemic racism, sexual violence, a police state. What about what we do want? Drawing on Robin D.G. Kelley’s Freedom Dreams, and the exploration of “Latinx Freedom Dreams” in Dr. Sara Awartani’s Arts&Resistance theme course by the same name, this workshop will invite participants to envision what those dreams actually feel like -- and what we can practice, together and today -- to bring those dreams closer to our lived reality. We'll play with Theatre of the Oppressed and Creative Drama techniques and explore a host of strategies for participatory invitations that might move an audience. Then, the group will devise (ie., collaboratively create) short participatory performance pieces about social issues or social movements that have material impact on them. At the end of the workshop, we'll have all come a little bit closer to freedom.
